Olivia Pope and Associates have found a new friend!
Friends alum Lisa Kudrow made her Scandal debut last week, and her character, Josie Marcus, caused quite a bit of trouble for the White House as she began to score political points in the primary election at Fitz's (Tony Goldwyn) expense. But Josie Marcus might not necessarily be the enemy.
"She's one of those congresspeople who are not part of the regular political system. [She] says what she thinks and that's what's appealing to people about her," Kudrow tellsTVGuide.com. "She comes out of nowhere and is thrust into the spotlight. Part of it is that she's not fully prepared for the attention that she's getting."
The spotlight will hit Josie hard on Thursday as she attempts to prevent the public from finding out that she had a child when she was a teenager — something that would surely quash her chances at reaching the White House. That's why she turns to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) for help. "She's just looking for scandal management," Kudrow says. "She doesn't want to address it all and keep it private because there is a child out there and she wants to respect that person's privacy."
Josie and Olivia will have differing opinions on how to handle her big scandal before heading into the democratic debate against Governor Reston (Tom Amandes). "She's going to stick with her down home persona of what you see is what you get," Kudrow says. "She doesn't always agree with Olivia Pope's strategy, which, as a viewer, I don't get because Olivia Pope is always right. I'd be playing something and be like, 'Why am I arguing with her? It's Olivia Pope!'"
Clearly, Kudrow is a big fan of the show, which also employs her producing partner (and Emmy winner!) Dan Bucatinsky. But Friends fans don't have Bucatinsky to thank for Kudrow's arc on Scandal. "I just got a call from [executive producers]Shonda Rhimes and Mark Wildingand they asked if I wanted to do some episodes. It didn't come from Dan, I don't think. He's an actor-producer-writer and he does a lot of things, but being my representative is not one of them," she says with a laugh.
