Host Paul Rudd and musical act One Direction weren't the only special guests on Saturday Night Live this week. Alums Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig returned to the show, and Rudd's Anchorman 2 castmates Will Ferrell (also an SNL vet), Steve Carell and David Koechner also made cameos to sing "Afternoon Delight" with One Direction during Rudd's opening monologue. The show also didn't miss the opportunity to skewer NBC's live Sound of Music musical, which aired Thursday. Check out some of the highlights below:
Sound of Music Cold Open: For those who weren't among the 18+ million viewers who tuned in to NBC's Sound of Music Live! this week, here is a condensed version — with special appearances by Armisen resurrecting his Lawrence Welk-esque variety host, and Dooneese (Wiig) as one of the Von Trapp children.
Opening Monologue: Tired of getting outshined by musical guest One Direction, Rudd brings out his "man band" (Ferrell, Carell and Koechner), and everyone joins in on a rousing rendition of "Afternoon Delight."
One Direction Concert Line: Rudd really goes all out in this sketch to play Dan Charles, One Direction's No. 1 fan.
Michelangelo Unveils David: The male model who posed for Michelangelo's sculpture of David (Rudd) attends the unveiling of the statue, and must explain to his horrified date (Cecily Strong) and other onlookers whether certain anatomical aspects of the piece are to scale.
Santa Meeting: After spending the off-season at a spa, Santa Claus (Rudd) has dropped 150 pounds and has traded in Mrs. Claus for a newer, younger model (Kate McKinnon). The elves are unimpressed.
