Sarah Palin Says New Reality Show Will Restore "What It Is That Made America Great"

Sarah Palin hasn't always been portrayed kindly in the press (see: her infamous 2008 interview with Katie Couric, Tina Fey's Emmy-winning impression on Saturday Night Live), but on Friday, the former Vice Presidential candidate embraced the media when discussing her new show, Amazing America With Sarah Palin at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour Friday.

"I love critics," Palin said early in her remarks to some awkward laughter from reporters. "I do, I love critics, and you know how much I love the media."

Palin went even further and invited reporters and critics in the room to come visit her and her husband, Todd, in Alaska for activities including ice-fishing in the front yard and riding snowmobiles. "I want to invite you guys to come up to Alaska and see our real world. See how it is that we live out that kind of Americana dream," she said. "It's that outdoor lifestyle we so love and enjoy and utilize."

When speaking about Amazing America With Sarah Palin, which premieres on the Sportsman Channel in April, Palin said she believed that the outdoor activities that will be showcased, as well as the show itself, would "restore, fundamentally, what it is that made America great." Palin pointed particularly to what she called Alaska's "pioneering, independent" spirit.

Although Palin was vague about Amazing America's exact format, other than that it will highlight people, places and things to "inspire and encourage," she was clear about what kind of message she hoped to send to viewers. "I want young  women to be inspired by the show that we're going to put together," she said. "I think this country would be better off having more young women holding a fish in a picture and fewer of them holding their camera in front of a bathroom mirror doing a selfie."

"I want to see them in the great outdoors learning how to fish," she continued, "and learning what is it that God created for us to utilize and enjoy."

Like her previous reality series Sarah Palin's Alaska, which ran on TLC in 2010, Palin said her family would play an important role on Amazing America With Sarah Palin. "It isn't going to be some kind of fake scripted reality show," Palin said." We're going to have the family involved in this." Beyond that, Palin stayed  largely mum on her TLC show. "I'm more excited about this project than many of the projects and things that I've done in the past," she said.
