Republican National Committee Threatens NBC and CNN Over Hillary Clinton Projects

The Republication National Committee is doing whatever it can to make sure potential Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton doesn't get any special treatment.

In separate letters sent Monday to the heads of NBC and CNN — Bob Greenblatt and Jeff Zucker, respectively — the RNC threatened to block the upcoming debates from airing on the networks if NBC and CNN proceed with their planned projects about the former First Lady and Secretary of State, Deadline.com reports.

If the two networks have not yet stopped work on their respective projects by the beginning of the RNC's summer meeting on Aug. 14, RNC chair Reince Priebus says he will "seek a binding vote stating that the RNC will neither partner with these networks in a 2016 primary debates nor sanction primary debates they sponsor." In his letters, Priebus said "out of a sense of fairness and decency and in the interest of the political process and your company's reputation, I call on you to cancel this political ad masquerading as an unbiased production."

NBC announced on July 27 that Diane Lane had been cast to play Clinton in a four-part miniseries eyed to debut next year. Days later, CNN revealed it was producing a feature-length documentary about Clinton that would premiere theatrically in 2014 before airing on the network. There is also a feature film, titled Rodham, in the works that is said to focus on Clinton's struggle with her own political ambitions and her desire a man — Bill Clinton — with great political aspirations of his own.

In a statement released just a few hours later, CNN blasted the RNC for the threat. "Instead of making premature decisions about a project that is in the very early stages of development and months from completion, we would encourage the members of the Republican National Committee to reserve judgment until they know more," CNN said  Should they decide not to participate in debates on CNN, we would find it curious, as limiting their debate participation seems to be the ultimate disservice to voters."
