According to his management firm Brunskill Management, Mayall died at home in London. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but the London Metropolitan Police say it is not believed to be suspicious.
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing," Adrian Edmondson, Mayall's writing and performing partner, said. "They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
Mayall is survived by his wife Barbara and three children.
