A new report in Vanity Fair claims the Church of Scientology "auditioned" actresses to be Tom Cruise's wife in 2004, after his divorce from Nicole Kidman and subsequent split from Penelope Cruz, both of whom "ran afoul" of the church.
The "top secret project" involved bringing actresses who were Scientologists in under the guise that they were auditioning for a new training film, according to the report. During the resulting interviews, they were reportedly asked questions about their sex lives and about Cruise.
Church of Scientology officials deny the report, and Cruise declined to be interviewed for the piece, according to Vanity Fair.
Boniadi, an Iranian-born actress who was raised in London and is a member of the Church of Scientology, was flown to New York in 2004 to meet with Cruise, after a month-long process in which she disclosed details about her personal and sexual histories to a high-ranking Scientology official. She was told that she had been "selected for a very important mission" and was also allegedly asked to make changes to her physical appearance and break up with her boyfriend at the time.
The night they met, Boniadi and Cruise went on a date that included ice skating at Rockefeller Center, and Boniadi was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement about Cruise, according to the report.
The article claims Boniadi and Cruise had a relationship from November 2004 until January 2005, when she was essentially dismissed by Scientology officials and asked to move out of Cruise's house and into Scientology's Celebrity Center in Florida. She claims she was punished for disclosing her relationship with Cruise to a friend at the center by being forced to clean toilets with a toothbrush and dig ditches in the middle of the night.
Boniadi is no longer involved with Scientology, according to Vanity Fair. Cruise started dating Holmes in 2005 and they were married and had their daughter Suri in 2006. Holmes file for divorce in June.
