Report: Boston Bombing Suspect Communicating with Officials

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains hospitalized and unable to speak because he has a gunshot wound to the neck that may have been self-inflicted, according to news reports. But he is communicating with authorities and responding to their questions in writing, CNN reports.

Tsarnaev, who was taken into custody Friday evening after an extensive manhunt, had been sedated because he was intubated. But doctors were convinced he would be able to communicate minimally if he's brought out of it on what is known as a "sedation holiday."

Investigators told CNN they have been questioning Tsarnaev, 19, since Sunday, but would not elaborate on what information he has been communicating. He is expected to be formally charged as early as Monday, according to news reports.

Authorities believe Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed during a shootout with police early Friday morning, intended to unleash more violence, according to The Boston Globe. During their investigation, police found a large quantity of IEDs, hand grenades, ammunition and other explosives, but they believe the Tsarnaev brothers were acting alone and independently.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's cause of death has not been determined, the Globe reports.

A moment of silence is planned in Boston for 2:50 p.m. Monday afternoon, which will mark exactly one week since the bombing at the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured about 170.
