Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted to marvelous numbers.
The highly anticipated drama premiered Tuesday to 11.9 million viewers and a 4.6 in the adults 18-to-49 demographic, making it the best drama debut since V's bow in 2009 and the highest-rated new show so far. S.H.I.E.L.D. dominated the 8 o'clock hour, beating The Voice and NCIS (19.5 million, 3.4), which was down seven tenths from last year's debut, head-to-head.
S.H.I.E.L.D. lead-out The Goldbergs premiered to 9.1 million and a 3.2, followed by Trophy Wife (6.6 million, 2.3) and Lucky 7 (4.6 million, 1.3), which was down six tenths from Private Practice's performance in the slot last fall.
Vote: Which fall premieres won you over? Which flopped?
NBC still won the night, powered by The Voice, which averaged 14.1 million and a 4.6 for its two-hour episode, tying S.H.I.E.L.D. for the night in the demo. It was down half a point from last fall's Tuesday premiere. Chicago Fire (9.3 million, 2.8) improved 47 percent from its series premiere.
CBS topped the night in viewership with the biggest audience going to NCIS for Part 1 of Cote de Pablo's exit arc. NCIS: Los Angeles (16.2 million, 3.0) dipped 12 percent and newly relocated Person of Interest (12.3 million, 2.3) was down a bit from its Thursday bow last season and Vegas' series premiere in the slot.
Fox's comedies took a huge hit, with three of them plummeting nearly 30 percent. The Mindy Project (3 million, 1.5) had the best week-to-week retention of all of them, dropping about 20 percent.
