Steven Bochco's new drama Murder in the Firstdebuted strongly for TNT on Monday.
The procedural, which stars Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson as homicide detectives investigating two seemingly unrelated murders that end up being connected, drew 3.8 million viewers. The launch makes Murder in the First the No. 1 new series launch on cable. With an encore, the drama brought in 4.9 million viewers.

The series bowed following the return of Major Crimes, which drew 5.2 million viewers, up 3 percent from the Season 2 premiere. The Closer spin-off rose to 6.7 million after its encore.
