Prison Break
Thank goodness fall TV started pre-Labor Day, and that this is the show kicking the whole thing off. This gritty, puzzling drama is already one of my favorites, and it's not just because Wentworth Miller is possibly the best-looking guy on TV this fall. Sorry just had to get that out of my system; otherwise I'd succumb to wondering how long it takes to apply that tattoo on the actor, and who the lucky makeup person is who gets to do it. Anyway, if I don't get past that, then I might miss something good, and I love a show that keeps me guessing and is always throwing me in different directions, and this one fits the bill. That end sequence of Michael getting the world's worst pedicure had me covering my eyes, and I'm not all that squeamish. I have no idea how all of the little pieces (like the aforementioned elaborate tattoo, the machine screw and the trips to the infirmary ) will tie together to help Michael break his brother, Lincoln, out of jail, but after two hours I already love trying to figure it out. I also haven't decided if Lincoln is actually innocent. He says that he didn't pull the trigger, but I rewound, and I swear it looks like the gun goes off in the video tape. Is it all really a big government conspiracy, or is Michael just a victim of misguided family loyalty? I'm skeptical, especially as prison and a death-row sentence aren't likely to bring out the best in a person. Sure, there are a ton of instances of implausibility like Michael being tossed from the prison's second floor onto concrete without getting seriously injured and oodles of coincidences like how he managed to land in the prison he happened to design, and how the warden just so happens to need an engineer to work on a pet project but that doesn't make it any less gripping. The only puzzle piece I think I was able to uncover was that the guy on the outside who Abruzzi is after is named Fibonacci. If I'm right, that's the name of a famous mathematical sequence of numbers that can be used as a code. That can't be a coincidence, right? The only thing I know for sure is that those blinking billboards in Chicago freak me out. Are they for real?  Angel Cohn
