According to a law-enforcement official, the Oscar-winning actor was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Sunday afternoon. The New York Police Department is currently investigating and no cause of death has been determined.
"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," a statement from Hoffman's family reads. "This is a tragic and sudden loss, and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
Hoffman has struggled with drug addiction for years and entered a detox facility for heroin last spring. He had been sober for 23 years prior.
Hoffman began his acting career in the early '90s, appearing in such films as Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski and The Talented Mr. Ripley.In 2005, he played the title role in Capote, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Actor. Hoffman also received Oscar nominations for his supporting roles in Charlie Wilson's War, Doubt andThe Master.
In addition to his film work, Hoffman was an accomplished stage actor, earning Tony nominations for True West, Death of a Salesman and Long Day's Journey into Night.
Hoffman co-starred in last year's Hunger Games film Catching Fire as gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. Lionsgate, the studio which produces the franchise, released the following statement, as obtained by Deadline: "Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We're very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip's family."
Hoffman's character also appears in the next two films in the series, but according to the website he completed the majority of filming for both Mockingjay Part 1 and 2 prior to his death.
In January, Showtime gave a series order to Happyish, a dark comedy in which Hoffman was to star. The series had shot its pilot, but is not currently in production. The future of the series remains unknown.
"Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation's finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent. It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time," Showtime said in a statement.
Hoffman is survived by his longtime girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell, their son Cooper, and daughters Tallulah and Willa.
