PETA wrote a letter on Monday thanking Oprah Winfrey for her April 4 show about the horrors of puppy mills and kill shelters, yet also condemning the American Kennel Club (AKC) for praising the episode even though they continue to "vigorously defend [breeders] for decades [so] they won't take a hit as a result of the ' Oprah Effect.'" In their letter to the queen of causes, PETA added, "Please beware: Legislation to stop puppy mills is fought tooth and nail by the American Kennel Club, which will defend breeders no matter what.... Thank you for being so strong and clear that adoption is the only way to go."

PETA said that viewers around the world were extraordinarily moved by the puppy-mill story; one viewer is even donating 100 spay surgeries to PETA's inexpensive spay/neuter program, SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please). To drive the point home even further, PETA says, "When you buy, pound puppies die." - Erin Fox
