Reubens will reprise his role as the titular TV, stage and film star. In the movie, a meeting with a mysterious stranger prompts Pee-wee to take a vacation for the first time ever.
In a statement, Apatow called working with Reubens "a dream come true."
"Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then — Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I've changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black," said 'Pee-wee Herman,' according to Netflix.
John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) will direct the project, and production is set to begin in the next few weeks.
