The Parkers Says Bye, Boo!
Tonight at 8 pm/ET, The Parkers ends its five-year run on UPN. Natch, Professor Oglevee (Dorien Wilson) finally decides he's in love with Nikki Parker, just as she's set to wed Johnnie. Will the grouch stop her wedding soap-opera style? "She gets married," series star Mo'Nique tells TV Guide Online. "Nikki has wanted to be a wife, but we don't know whose wife she's gonna be."
Oh, c'mon. Parkers fans may as well bust out the champers and toast to Nikki's happy ending as Mrs. Oglevee right now. "Well, I don't know if I necessarily get the Professor at last," Mo teases in character. "Nope, nope... But you know what, he really does love her. He's always been there for her. Whether he wanted to be or not, he was there!"
Mo'Nique says she's not mad that UPN canceled her signature sitcom. "The network said this was going to be the series finale and no one was fighting that," she recalls of the news. "It was time. Had they wanted to go another season, we would have with no complaints. But I like going out at the top of my game."
Meanwhile, it isn't as if Mo has nowhere to go. She still emcees Showtime at the Apollo — "Wop, wop, y'all!" — and hosts the Lifetime special Queen for a Day on May 27. Word is Queen — an upbeat update of the '50s game-show hit — could be picked up as a series. Plus, the very busy funnylady's writing a cookbook extolling the virtues of fatty foods. And she co-stars in MGM's Soul Plane (opening May 28). Think Airplane! with an African-American twist. "It is a spoof," she admits, "but it's got it's own little niches.
"I am the sexy security-check agent at the airport," she adds with a chuckle. "You know how they dress real stuffy? Well, I open my shirt and show cleavage and have me some rhinestone earrings. Fabulous!"
