Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) have made a lot of friends in the second season of Outlander as they attempt to rewrite history — but none have wormed deep into the hearts of fans as well as Fergus (Romann Berrux).
The pint-sized pickpocket, who Jamie picked up at the Parisian brothel to help intercept messages meant for Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower, has gone from informant to the Frasers' surrogate son. His unwavering loyalty to the show's central couple has made him an essential asset to their plight and honestly, he's the cutest kid you've ever seen.
Fergus is arguably the best thing about Outlander's second season, so in honor, we're raising a glass (and a few GIFs) to his awesomeness. How much do we love you Fergus? Let us count the ways.
1. Fergus doesn't let his size keep him from battle
You can't launch a rebellion without Fergus. The little dude is ready to ride in with his little horse and there's nothing you can do to stop him.
2. Fergus is not a Fraser by blood, but he's a member of the family
Fergus has refused to leave the Frasers from the moment Jamie hired him to help. Yes Fergus, your place is with them and we wouldn't want you anywhere else.
3. Fergus never wastes an opportunity
It's best not to get in the middle when the Lord you are serving is in the middle of a brawl. Instead, make sure the feast they left at the table doesn't go to waste. There are people starving, you know?
4. Fergus is always ready to look after Claire
Sometimes the Lord of the house gets into a brawl after a big dinner party and someone has to stay up with Claire until Jamie returns home safely. And then everyone finally goes to bed like a happy family.
5. ....And Jamie
Sometimes it's Jamie that needs the minding and Fergus becomes Claire's agent to make sure his stubborn Scottish adopted father doesn't get into trouble either.
6. Fergus intends to keep his promises
Fergus has never taken an oath to the Frasers that he didn't intend to keep, including getting Claire to her own dinner party on time. Even a kid as cute as Fergus can't argue with Claire, but we admire him for trying.
7. Fergus understands the ladies
Maybe it's all the time he spent in the brothel, but Fergus knows how to charm the ladies. Unfortunately, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) isn't so eager to take advice from a pre-teen thief.
8. Fergus may be a thief, but he still has a moral code
He'll raid your pockets, but Fergus has a line that won't be crossed, and he won't be willingly taken advantage of either.
9. Fergus delivers the mischievous comedic relief
Trying to overwrite history can often be tedious and heartbreaking, which is why it is such a relief to have a young boy who understands how to have fun even at the most tense of times. Thanks Fergus, for knowing that sometime we really need a laugh.
10. Fergus is a tough kid with a heart of gold
Fergus wasn't willing to let Jamie go off to battle without him, but he was manly enough to admit that the gruesome nature of war was too much for him when they returned back to camp. He may have scarred us by putting himself in the middle of danger, but we're glad to see that the horrors he witnessed didn't completely turn his gentle heart to stone.
You're a good lad, Fergus. Cheers!
Outlander continues Saturdays at 9/8c on Starz.
