"She dates some real weirdos," creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether said at the Television Critics Association fall previews on Sunday. "One of them may or may not have a micro-penis."
Jess' new dating developments come in the wake of her disastrous breakup with her roommate and friend Nick (Jake Johnson). In New Girl's first and second seasons, fans rooted hard for the will-they-or-won't-they couple to finally take their relationship to the next level. But after the pair decided to become a couple at the beginning of Season 3, the show drew criticism from both critics and viewers.
"I've never really been in a good relationship," Meriwether said with a laugh about the challenges of writing Nick and Jess as a couple. "It's been easier for me to just write them as single people, single idiots [who are] kind of out in the world trying to get laid and looking for love. It's just been more fun. I had trouble kind of figuring out where the conflict and the comedy was coming from in their relationship last season. I think I'm really proud of last season and I think they did an amazing job, but it's definitely fun to kind of keep them apart for awhile, and we're having a lot of fun writing Jess out dating and getting into jams."
Although Nick and Jess will spend some time apart, Meriwether hasn't ruled out the possibility of Nick and Jess getting back together someday. "I mean, I love them together and I don't think it's it for them at all," she said.
New Girl's new season premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9/8c on Fox. Do you want Nick and Jess to reunite?
