From the looks of it, Raising Dionwill be a very different superhero origin story. On Wednesday, Netflix unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi series, and it promises a visually stunning story about family, friendship, grief, loss, and literal black boy magic.

Based on the comic book from Dennis Liu, the story centers on Nicole Reese (Alisha Wainwright), a single mom raising her precocious superhero- and science-loving 8-year-old son, Dion (Ja'Siah Young) following the death of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan). The difficulties of parenthood are exacerbated when Dion starts to display super abilities like telekinesis and teleportation. With help from Mark's best friend, Pat (Jason Ritter), it's up to Nicole to protect her son from shady government officials who plan to exploit Dion's newly discovered gifts.

Jordan executive-produced the project alongside Liu, Kenny Goodman, Michael Green, and Seith Mann, who also directed several episodes of the show's nine-episode first season. UnREAL's Carol Barbee serves as the showrunner.

Catch Raising Dion when it arrives Friday, Oct. 4 on Netflix.
