NBC To Adapt Venezuelan Telenovela The Black Widow

NBC is adapting the popular Venezuelan telenovela The Black Widow for American audiences. Sri Rao (General Hospital: Night Shift) will write the script. The Black Widow is based on Venezuela's telenovela La Viuda Joven, which premiered in 2011 and aired 142 episodes around the world. Electus is producing. The Black Widow is one of three telenovelas that Electus is developing for NBC, with an eye toward one of them airing as a 13-episode series, with multiple episodes running each week, much like an actual telenovela.

"We believe there is huge potential for telenovelas to be adapted and developed for American viewers. These stories clearly have resonance across all cultures and nationalities," said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

Rao will co-executive produce with Electus' founder-creator Ben Silverman and Jimmy Fox.
