Someone may be out of the picture when Modern Family returns for Season 3 this fall.
Producers are taking steps to recast the role of Baby Lily, telling casting agents that the comedy is looking for an "Asian, 3-to-4-year-old" to play Cameron and Mitchell's daughter, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Baby Lily is currently played by twins Jaden and Ella Hiller, who have been with the Emmy-winning comedy from the start. The very quiet twins still have a shot at keeping their day jobs, but producers want to keep their options open before production resumes next month in Los Angeles.
"We adore Jaden and Ella, but have started to think that they'd rather be at home playing than working as actors," executive producer Steve Levitan told the magazine. "If we end up making a change, it's only because we want what's best for them."
Modern Family producers are also trying to find new actors because they want the character of Lily to start speaking up more. "At some point, Lily has to stop being a silent baby and has to become a little girl — a laughing, acting little girl," Levitan told EW.
Modern Family returns for Season 3 on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9/8c on ABC.
