Report: Mindy McCready Found Dead After Apparent Suicide

Country singer Mindy McCready was found dead in her home Sunday, E! News reports. She was 37.

Andrea Canning, a correspondent for NBC's Dateline, tweeted that she had received a call from McCready's best friend that the singer shot and killed herself.

The news comes after a month of trouble that began on Jan. 13, when McCready's partner and father of one of her children, record producer David Wilson, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home. In a statement released days after Wilson's death, McCready called him her "soulmate." McCready's two children were reportedly removed from her care on Feb. 6 when a judge sent the country singer to a mental health facility, where she was set to undergo psychiatric and alcohol-abuse evaluations. She was released one day later and allowed to undergo outpatient treatment instead.

A Florida native, McCready first burst onto the country scene in 1996 with her multi-platinum debut album Ten Thousand Angels, which included hits like "Guys Do It All the Time," "A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)." Her sophomore effort, 1997's If I Don't Stay the Night went gold, followed by 1999's I'm Not So Tough, which failed to reach the same commercial success. She was then dropped by her label and released her self-titled album in 2002 through Capital Records before they parted ways.

In recent years, McCready's personal troubles began to overshadow her musical talents. After a brief engagement to Dean Cain in 1997, McCready's ex-boyfriend, Billy McKnight, was arrested and charged with attempted murder after beating and choking her in May 2005. She attempted suicide the July after the incident and was soon hospitalized for a drug overdose after mixing undisclosed drugs with alcohol. McCready attempted suicide again that September by overdosing on antidepressants when she was pregnant with McKnight's child. She welcomed son Zander Ryan McCready in March 2006. In December 2008, she tried to commit suicide a third time and wounds were found on her wrists.

In addition to her multiple suicide attempts, McCready had several run-ins with the law. She was arrested in 2004 for using a fake prescription to buy OxyContin. The following year she was charged with — and later found not guilty of — a DUI  and driving with a suspended license. In July 2005, she was charged with identity theft, unlawful imprisonment and hindering prosecution. She was charged with violating her probation in Tennessee in 2006 and 2007. For the latter charge, she was sentenced to one year in jail, two more years of probation and 500 hours of community service. She was released from jail three months later in December 2007. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail in September 2008 for violating her 2007 probation, but she was released for good behavior after serving half her sentence.

In 2008, it was also revealed that the singer had been involved a long-term extramarital affair with former Major League Baseball player Roger Clemens that lasted for more than ten years. In 2010, McCready appeared on the third season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew to battle her substance addiction. She released what would be her fifth and final album, I'm Still Here, later that year.
