Michael Strahan will leave Live with Kelly and Michael earlier than originally planned. People reports that the morning show co-host's last day will be May 13, four months sooner than previously announced.
"After meeting with the producers of both Live and Good Morning America, and after speaking with Kelly and Michael, we have decided on a plan that best advantages both shows for the future," an ABC spokesperson confirmed in a statement to People. "To that end, Michael's last day on Live! will be on Friday, May 13, which not only gives the show the chance to have a nice send-off for him during the May book, but to also immediately begin the on-air search for a new co-host."
Kelly Ripa returned to the show Tuesday morning after taking a week off in the wake of being blindsided by the news of Strahan's departure last week. She acknowledged that ABC executives had apologized for the way they broke they news, saying she's grateful the drama has sparked a "greater conversation about communication and consideration, and most importantly, respect in the workplace."
A source familiar with the show told People that ABC has also apologized to Strahan for putting him in an awkward position. According to the source, Strahan's early departure isn't due to tension with Ripa, with whom relations are chilly but cordial, but simply because it gives Live more time to find Strahan's replacement. Strahan will join Good Morning America in September.
