Mega Buzz: Whose Heart Will Be Broken on Rizzoli & Isles?

Heartache is in the air on Rizzoli & Isles.
As we previously reported, Maura (Sasha Alexander) and Jack (Enver Gjokaj) will break up this season, but this will be not be as swift -- or as deadly -- as the demise of Maura's past relationships. "Every person she's tried to date has tried to kill her!" executive producer Jan Nash tells TVGuide.com with a laugh. "We wanted to give her somebody who seemed great, who seemed like he was right. The breakup is not a function of his inability or failures to be in a relationship. The breakup is a function of the circumstances that life brings you. It just feels sad. There's no other way to describe it."

In reality, the split is due to Gjokaj's series regular role on Agent Carter. But instead of making Jack a heard-but-not-seen beau, Nash opted to use the breakup to embolden Maura and Jane's friendship. "The inevitability and the tragedy of that will then be a thing that Maura has to get through and Jane will help her," she says. "It's much easier to get over, like, 'Oh, I really liked him, but he was a serial killer!' As weird as that sounds! It's much harder to get over, 'I really liked him and we can't be together.'"
