Mariel Hemingway: Woody Allen Tried to Seduce Me When I Was a Teen

In her new memoir, actress Mariel Hemingway claims Woody Allen tried to woo her with a trip to Paris when she was 17 and he was in his early 40s.

The year prior in 1979, Hemingway starred alongside Allen in his film Manhattanas his character Isaac's much younger love interest, Tracy. "The one thing that threw me was the sexual innuendos -- and sometimes they weren't even innuendos but outright sex talk," Hemingway writes in her book Out Came the Sun, as reported by Yahoo! "There's a moment in the movie when [Hemingway's character] Tracy and [Allen's character] Isaac are in bed, eating food. 'Let's do it some strange way you've always wanted to do but nobody would do with you,' Tracy says."

According to Hemingway, while they were working together on Manhattan, Allen took her on several outings to museums and art galleries, and invited her to accompany him on a trip to Paris. "Our relationship was platonic, but I started to see that he had a kind of crush on me, though I dismissed it as the kind of thing that seemed to happen any time middle-aged men got around young women," she writes. "And I encouraged the conversations and the walks because they validated me."

As she got older and more informed, Hemingway writes, she became surprised that her parents allowed her to inhabit such adult roles on film and was hoping they would forbid her from going to Paris with Allen.

"I told my parents about the Paris offer, hoping they would squash it immediately. Instead, they were impressed and even a little enthusiastic," she writes. "I told them that that I didn't know what the arrangement was going to be, that I wasn't sure if I was even going to have my own room. Woody hadn't said that. He hadn't even hinted it. But I wanted them to put their foot down. They didn't. They kept lightly encouraging me."

When Allen came to visit her at her parents' home, she told him she wasn't going to go with him to Paris. "Deep down, I was really sad," she explains. "I loved him as a friend. He had made me feel important in ways that I hadn't, up to that point, felt."

Allen left Hemingway's parents' house the morning after she rejected his offer. The two remained friends, reteaming for Allen's 1997 movie Deconstructing Harry, and Hemingway attended the Golden Globe Awards last year in support of an absent Allen, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Out Came the Sun will be released April 7.
