Fresh off his second Oscar win in three years, Mahershala Ali has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The True Detectivestar will play Blade in a reboot of the vampire superhero franchise.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the news during the studio's San Diego Comic-Con panel in Hall H on Saturday night.

Every Marvel Movie and Disney+ Series Coming Out Until 2022

No other details about the project were revealed, though it's likely Blade won't arrive in theaters until after the MCU's Phase 4 slate, which runs from Black Widow (in May 2020) to Thor: Love and Thunder (May 2021).

Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, Blade made his first comics appearance in 1973. The character hit the big screen in 1998 with Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as the eponymous vampire hunter.

This isn't the first time Ali has played a role for Marvel. The actor co-starred in the first season of the Netflix seriesLuke Cage, which -- at the time -- was part of Marvel's canon. (The four Netflix series, all of which have since been canceled, existed in the backdrop of the events of Marvel's The Avengers.)
