Mad Men won the Writers Guild award for best dramatic TV series, and Modern Family for best TV comedy series.

Mad Men also took the prize for dramatic episode ("The Chrysanthemum and the Sword") while 30 Rock took best TV comedy episode honors ("When It Rains, It Pours") at the 2011 Writers Guild of America awards, held Saturday night in New York and Los Angeles.

HBO snagged three awards. The TV movie The Special Relationship was named the best long-form original work and Part 8 of The Pacific won for best long-form adaptation. The pay cable network's freshman drama Boardwalk Empire was recognized as the year's best new TV series.

Boardwalk Empire, The King's Speech top SAG Awards

Comedy Central won two awards —best comedy/variety series, for The Colbert Report, and best animation work, for the Futuramaepisode "The Prisoner of Brenda."

As the World Turns — which went off the air in September after 54 years — was honored as best daytime serial.

The King's Speech, Boardwalk Empire win Directors Guild Awards

On the film side, Aaron Sorkin won best adapted screenplay for The Social Network, and Christopher Nolan's Inception was named best original screenplay. Best documentary screenplay went to the financial crisis documentary Inside Job.

The wins put Sorkin and Nolan in the position of front-runners in the same categories at the Academy Awards on Feb. 27.

The Social Network was considered an early favorite for a best-picture Oscar. But it has been upstaged in recent award ceremonies by The King's Speech — which was ineligible for a WGA award because it was not made under the union's contract guidelines.

Honorary award winners included longtime Simpsons writer Mike Scully, Murphy Brown creator Diane English and Schindler's List screenwriter Steve Zaillian.
