FIFA has banned Uruguay's Luiz Suarez for nine international matches, and suspended the Liverpool striker from any football activity for four months because he bit an opposing player during a match this week, the organization announced Thursday.
The ban will take effect immediately, meaning Suarez will miss Saturday's game against Colombia as well as the rest of the tournament. This is the third time he has been banned for biting an opponent. He has also been previously banned and fined for racial abuse and other infractions on the field.
During Uruguay's match against Italy Tuesday, Suarez tussled with Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on the ground. When the men got up, Chiellini pulled down his shirt to indicate that Suarez had bitten him on the shoulder. Watch video of the incident here.
Play continues Thursday . The scheduled matches are: USA vs. Germany (noon/11c, ESPN), Portugal vs. Ghana (noon/11c, ESPN2), South Korea vs. Belgium (4/3c, ESPN), and Algeria vs. Russia (4/3c, ESPN2).
