Laurence Fishburne will star as author Alex Haley in the remake of Roots, A&E Networks announced Wednesday.

The remake, which will air across History, A&E and Lifetime, will feature an original take on the generational story, incorporating material from Haley's novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family and new research.

ABC first adapted Haley's novel for a 1977 miniseries, which garnered over 30 Emmy nominations and nine wins. James Earl Jones originated the role of Haley in the 1977 original.

Fishburne can currently be seen on Hannibal and Black-ish. His previous credits include Tribeca, What's Love Got to Do With It, Boyz n the Hood, The Color Purple and The Matrix.
