The Los Angeles Police Department announced Friday that it's currently testing a knife found on the site of O.J. Simpson's home, which was razed in 1998. The Los Angeles Times reports that a retired police officer turned in the knife, given to him by a construction worker who helped in the demolition decades after the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

The LAPD's elite Robbery-Homicide division is involved and forensics are underway. Officials said at a press conference Friday that the officer who surrendered the knife was a traffic cop who was working on a movie set when he got the knife. Detectives became aware of it last month and are unclear why he waited so long to hand it over. The absence of the actual knife used in the killings has stumped investigators on the case since the 1995 trial.

What can we learn from FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story?

Of course, the timing of the discovery is significant and a bit uncanny, since it coincides with the airing of the FX series American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson, which is receiving rave reviews. But even if the knife turns out to be the murder weapon, experts say, it's unlikely Simpson would be tried again since he has already been acquitted.
