Orb won the 139th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday thanks to a late rally. It was the first Derby win for his Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.
Orb was ridden by Joel Rosario and finished in 2:02:89 after surging down the final stretch. Before the race, Orb had been listed as a favorite at 5-1, along with co-favorite Revolutionary, who came in third. Golden Soul, who placed second, was at 34-1.
The Derby was short one horse in the typical 20-horse race when Black Onyx, who had been in the No. 1 position in the starting gate, scratched due to a chipped bone in his front left ankle. Unfortunately, the scratch came too late for Fear the Kitten, the alternate, to get into the race since it came after the 9 a.m. Friday deadline.
