ESPN has suspended host Keith Olbermann for a week after he engaged in a Twitter feud with several Penn State students on Monday evening.

Originally responding to a tweet about the school's annual pediatric cancer fundraiser that simply said "We are," Olbermann, 56, offered a one-word response: "pitiful." As he received more and more angry messages from students and alumni, he then made snide remarks about PSU students' ability to read. When a PSU student blasted Olbermann for calling the students' fundraising efforts "pitiful," he told the student to get his money back and that "PSU students are pitiful because they're PSU students - period."

ESPN called Olbermann's comments "completely inappropriate" in a statement released Tuesday. "We are aware of the exchange Keith Olbermann had on Twitter last night regarding Penn State," the statement read. "It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the views of ESPN. We have discussed it with Keith, who recognizes he was wrong. ESPN and Keith have agreed that he will not host his show for the remainder of this week and will return on Monday. The annual tradition of THON and the efforts of the students of Penn State to fight pediatric cancer should be applauded."

Olbermann has since posted an apology to Twitter.

I apologize for the PSU tweets. I was stupid and childish and way less mature than the students there who did such a great fundraising job.

This is not the first time Olbermann has made his dislike for Penn State known. Just last month he put the school on his "World's Worst in Sports" list. You can watch the video of that below:

This is also not the first time Olbermann has been suspended. He was suspended by MSNBC for nearly two weeks in 2010 for violating a network policy regarding political donations. He and the network parted ways three months later.

Olbermann will return to his show on Monday, March 2.

What do you think of Olbermann's comments? Did ESPN make the right call?
