Something that has rarely happened on MTV's The Real World in its 29 seasons goes down on this Wednesday's episode (10/9c) when one of the housemates abruptly walks out.
The exit of housemate Ashley Mitchell has nothing to do with this season's 'Ex-plosion' game-changing twist that finds the roommates reunited with ex-loves. Rather, explains executive producer Jim Johnston, Mitchell had a hard time staying away from her current beau, who was living just blocks away from the Real World house in San Francisco.
"We required her to stay in the house every night and she had a really difficult time," says Johnston. "She was very insecure and it just seemed like every night she got angry with the other roommates. Each night she had blow-ups and meltdowns. Finally about two weeks into the show, she took off with her boyfriend."
Johnston says producers attempted to woo Mitchell back, but she resisted. However, he teases, "She will be back. On her own, she calls the roommates and asks them to vote to decide if they want her to move back in, but the vote does not go her way. Her ego was terribly hurt."
Immediately following the Jan. 22 episode, MTV will air a special (11/10c) during which Mitchell will be confronted by her former housemates. "An issue developed after Ashley moved out that made them dislike her even more," teases Johnston. "It's going to be very fun to watch."
The season's Real World was filmed in San Francisco from August through October 2013. The game-changing arrival of the remaining roommates' exes will air at the end of the Jan. 29 episode, and fans will have to tune in throughout the season to see which roomies hook up with their exes. "There's a whole range," Johnston says. "One couple may renew their relationship and fall much deeper in love, while others who think they're going to renew are shocked by events. It's unbelievable."
