Katy Perry has found herself once again accidentally embroiled in a bizarre controversy. The pop star is now deep into a real estate face-off, stuck between the Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, The Los Angeles Times reports.
Over the years, the Sisters' number has dwindled to a meager five, so the remaining nuns decided to sell their former convent in Los Feliz. The Archbishop planned to sell the property to Perry, who wants to convert it to a home where she can "sit in the meditation garden, sip green tea and find herself." Perry even met with the nuns in an attempt to make a good impression. However, showing them her "Jesus" tattoo on her wrist and singing "Oh Happy Day" apparently didn't earn her too much favor and the nuns soon began plotting to stop the sale of the convent to Perry. (Maybe they're just Taylor Swift fans?)
"Well, I found Katy Perry and I found her videos and ... if it's all right to say, I wasn't happy with any of it," said Sister Rita, who also expressed distaste for Perry's Super Bowl performance, which included suggestive lyrics and flying around like a shooting star.
"I thought, is that a way to make money?" said Sister Rita. "Maybe I could fly around. I could be the flying nun."
Two of the five living sisters insist the convent is theirs, and therefore only theirs to sell. So before Archbishop Gomez could move forward with the deal with Perry, the duo quickly signed over the property to local restaurateur Dana Hollister for $15.5 million, 1 million more than Perry had agreed to pay.
The two sisters and the Archbishop have now entered in an intense legal battle, including the diocese suing Hollister and a court order allowing Perry to visit the convent with her architect. The two nuns are also insisting that the three sisters who signed declarations supporting Gomez's right to sign the property may have been coerced or misled.
The sisters claim this is only the latest of many issues they've encountered with the diocese and that they're worried if the Archbishop sells the property to Perry, they won't have their living expenses covered.
"We have given many years to this archdiocese and we have served them well," said Sister Rita. "For the archdiocese to ... put us under a bus and run over us, I'm sorry, it was just too much for me."
