Katie Holmes' decision to divorce may have caught many by surprise, but apparently it was a long time coming for the actress.
According to divorce papers obtained by TMZ, Holmes, 33, says her marriage to Tom Cruise was "irretrievably" broken for at least six months before she filed for divorce. In the documents, Holmes also claims that she and Cruise have both been New York residents for "at least two years," even though they also shared a home in Beverly Hills, Calif. for years.

Holmes, 33, filed for divorce in New York as opposed to California because it is believed New York is more likely to grand her sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
