JoJo a Superstar No Mo'!
When WB crowns (or is that "beheads"?) its Superstar USA
tonight (9 pm/ET), three things are certain: 1.) Our ears will bleed. 2.) The "winner" will cry, if not from excitement, then from embarrassment. And 3.) JoJo
will be sad. As the ambitious platinum blond tells TV Guide Online, he doesn't care that Tone-Loc
, Vitamin C
and the entire viewing audience were laughing at him; he was just happy that we were looking at him at all.
TV Guide Online: How did you find out that Superstar USA had turned you into a punch line?
JoJo: One of the producers called and was like, "I need to talk to you." I'm thinking, "It's just to tie up loose ends," and then he said, you know, "You were the butt of a joke."
JoJo: To be honest with you, I laughed! I had such a fun time doing it that even though it was a joke, you know what? I still have the experience. I always had a suspicion that something was going on, but I could never pinpoint what it was. I never expected that it was a competition based on people who can't sing.
TVGO: Hadn't you ever heard yourself sing?
JoJo: I've heard myself sing before, and by no means do I say I'm the best singer in the world, but I don't think I'm the absolute worst. To hear myself sing has definitely been an experience. Every time I hear myself sing, I blush. I'll turn away. Sometimes, when I hear myself sing, like on TV, I'll leave the room, just because, you know, I get kind of embarrassed.
TVGO: I can imagine.
JoJo: I'll say, "Oh, I screwed up on that part!" or "I should have held that note longer!"... things like that. But it's interesting to see the way the show is being edited.
TVGO: How so?
JoJo: Well, the whole show is based on entertainment, so of course they're going to make it as entertaining as possible.
TVGO: I think you're on to something there. Go on.
JoJo: There are certain things that I said and did on camera that I was like, "Oh my gosh, I hope they'll edit that out." But sure enough, they [left] it in. Like, I didn't really think they would use the part with me ripping off my pants, but they did. And I didn't think I kicked my leg high enough [while dancing on my bed] to deserve a star [over my private parts]. My grandma was impressed by that one.
TVGO: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're just glad to get the exposure — any kind of exposure.
JoJo: JoJo definitely loves attention. Anytime JoJo can grab that opportunity to get attention, he's going to!
TVGO: How do you plan to continue doing so? Will you patent your dance move? What was it called, the worm?
JoJo: They call it the JoJo now! Before, it was the snake. They referred to me as having no bones. But I'm definitely not a choreographer. I probably won't be singing, either. After this show, I think that would be kind of redundant.
TVGO: And also really, really hard.
JoJo: I'd like to do some acting. I love comedies, so anytime I get the opportunity to make an ass of myself, I'm going to love it. That's why I did most of the things that I did in front of the camera. I love the shock value in life.
TVGO: Well, you've already got quite a reel assembled. Since your booty was so prominently featured on the show, has your social life improved?
JoJo: JoJo's got nothing but booty! You've got to focus on your assets, and JoJo's got booty. I'm a pretty social guy, but in regards to my social life, like, romantically, I'm not getting that many offers. But I've met tons and tons of people who are just, like, "JoJo, you're awesome! JoJo, we love you!" They're kind of starstruck, because they've never seen anybody who's been on TV before. But I don't consider myself a star. I consider myself a superstar!
