The prize money is practically chump change compared to Rich's pre-victory haul: $1,011,900. Runner-up Marlee Matlin failed to nab the title but still raked in $1,050,000 for the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The total raised for charity this season: $3,120,852.
"John was focused, motivated, smart and a good team player," Donald Trump said of his decision to "hire" Rich on Sunday's live finale. "We all know he's talented, too. He proved he could maneuver his way into situations that were remarkably productive—which was a benefit for everyone. I congratulate him on his win—John's a star all the way."
Trump let Matlin down more easily than he usually does. Announcing that he was going to do "something a little different," he never uttered his catchphrase, "You're fired!" to her. Instead, he merely named Rich the winner.
"This entire experience has been for the kids and I'm so excited to raise money for this cause and help save lives," Rich said. "I want to congratulate Marlee Matlin on her outstanding performance on the show and the monies she raised for her charity. It's a great day for all of us."
