Jersey Shore star Ronnie Ortiz-Magro has been indicted on an assault charge stemming from a Season 1 episode of the MTV series where he was shown knocking a man unconscious, The Asbury Park Press reports.
The grand jury charged the 25-year-old reality star with one count of third-degree assault. He faces up to five years in state prison if convicted.
The indictment alleges that Ortiz-Magro "did purposely or knowingly cause significant bodily injury to Stephen Izzo by striking in the face with a closed fist, causing him to lose consciousness," according to the newspaper. According to court papers, the incident occurred on or about Sept. 4, 2009 in Seaside Heights, N.J., where Jersey Shore is filmed.
In the episode, titled "One Shot," the incident took place after cast member Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi starts making out with the boyfriend of a girl who is with a group including Izzo in a Seaside Heights nightclub.
Izzo has a lawsuit pending against Ortiz-Magro, MTV, Jersey Shore producers and the nightclub over the alleged assault.
Ortiz-Magro has scheduled a prearraignment conference for Jan. 4.
The Jersey Shore cast was recently named among Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People. The new season premieres on Jan. 6.
