The Beek is back! After a hilarious turn as himself on ABC's Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, James Van Der Beek is sticking with the yuks in Friends With Better Lives, a new CBS comedy about a group of pals — including Entourage's Kevin Connolly and model Brooklyn Decker — who are all over the romantic map. Just don't ask about the Dawson's Creek theme song...'cause that's no laughing matter!
TV Guide Magazine: So, do you have friends with better lives?
James Van der Beek: There are things are things about your own life that go unappreciated, and things about other peoples' lives where you go 'hmm...that would be nice." But you know, I think the grass is always greener.
TV Guide Magazine: Before Don't Trust the B, did you ever see yourself getting into comedy?
Van der Beek: If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would probably have said no way. But I have a lot of fun with it. And the live-audience thing is kind of cool because it keeps you honest.
TV Guide Magazine: What is the weirdest thing a fan has asked you to sign?
Van der Beek: Any time you sign skin is always weird. Clothing is very weird. Because you have to wash that at some point, right? [Laughs]
TV Guide Magazine: Did you have a TV hero growing up?
Van der Beek: Mandy Patinkin Mandy Patinkin was my hero. I used to watch Chicago Hope, and he was so good in that. I actually wanted to be Mandy Patinkin, but then I got famous at 20 and totally blew that. [Laughs]
TV Guide Magazine: Do you ever hear the Dawson's Creek theme song, "I Don't Wanna Wait," and go into seizures?
Van der Beek: [Laughs] I actually do have a weird kind of PTSD whenever I hear it. I still feel the need to hide. When I'm in my living room watching football and that commercial comes on with it — it's for some beer — and in my own house, start to feel like I need to crawl under the cushions. I need to get some therapy on that.
Friends With Better Lives premieres Monday at 9:01/8:01c on CBS.
