James Van Der Beek James Van Der Beek

No one can accuse James Van Der Beek of not having a sense of humor, especially when it comes to himself. The former Dawson's Creek star has repeatedly made fun of his earnest character Dawson Leery on Funny or Die, and he's done such a good job of it that he might end up playing a caricature of himself full-time, if the ABC pilot called Don't Trust the Bi--- in Apartment 23 gets picked up.

"We've created this alternate character that bears a passing resemblance to me, but is much funnier than I am," Van Der Beek told TV Guide Magazine at Logo's New Now Next Awards, which he hosted in Los Angeles Thursday. "I play an actor named James Van Der Beek who's single, and using the fact that he was on Dawson's Creek to get laid. It's a totally bizarre version of me, but we just go with what's funniest."

The married actor, whose wife recently gave birth to their first child, hesitated slightly when offered the part to play himself. "Yeah, you know, I did scratch my head about it a little bit," he admits. "But it was honestly the funniest pilot I read all year, by far. I thought I'd be crazy not to be associated with this."

The pilot, created by Family Guy writer Nahnatchka Khan, stars Krysten Ritter as "the bi---" — that is, an eccentric girl with an usual moneymaking scheme. "She posts for roommates, takes their money — first month's and last month's rent and deposit — and then acts crazy and forces them to move out. And I am the bitch's best friend."

But first, Van Der Beek will show off his comedic chops as the host of Logo's annual awards show (airing this Sunday at 10/9c), a gig that he says was given to him as a result of just having a blast. "What I've been doing is kind of saying yes to anything that sounded fun," he says. "Instead of being precious and careful and calculating I've just been saying yes, because it sounded like it would be a hoot."
