James Franco Snubbed by Oscars Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The nominees for The 90th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning and James Franco failed land a nod for his performance in The Disaster Artist. While Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water lead with 13 nominations including Best Picture, the Franco-directed Disaster Artist only picked up one nomination, for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Franco recently took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, even bringing Tommy Wiseau on stage for his acceptance speech. Many awards pundits previously assumed that Franco would at least get an Oscar nomination for his work in the critically-acclaimed comedy, but things didn't pan out that way.

The actor became the subject of intense backlash that began the night of the Globes, which aired two days into the voting period for Oscar nominations. After sporting a pin supporting the Time's Up movement, which looks to end sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood among other things, allegations against the star began bubbling up on Twitter. On Jan. 11, one day before the voting period for Oscar nods ended, the Los Angeles Times published a detailed report in which five women accused Franco of sexual misconduct, including pressuring a woman to perform oral sex on him.

Franco has denied the allegations while also voicing his support for the moment. "The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate. But I completely support people coming out and be able to have a voice because they were unable to have a voice for so long, so I don't want to shut them down in any way. I think it's a good thing and I support it," he said earlier this month.

Alison Brie, who is married to the actor's brother and Disaster Artist co-star Dave Franco, also came to his defense, saying that not everything that's been reported about the allegations has been accurate. "I obviously support my family, and not everything that's been reported is fully accurate, so I think we're waiting to get all the information. But of course now is the time for listening, and that's what we're all trying to do," Brie said at Sunday's Screen Actor's Guild Awards.
