Straight Girl's Queer Crisis!
The 21-year-old bachelorette at the heart of Fox's latest dating romp, Playing It Straight
, better fine-tune her gaydar if she wants to meet Mr. Right Orientation. On Friday's premiere, Jackie
gave the boot to two guys she suspected were gay but who were actually straight. (Somewhere, Liza Minnelli
is feeling her pain.) TV Guide Online rang up the perky Wisconsin coed — and suspected Jennifer Love Hewitt
clone — to see whether her queer eye could pass our
TV Guide Online: How was the show initially presented to you?
Jackie: They told me it was going to be a dating show with a big twist.
TVGO: What did you think it might be?
Jackie: Honestly, I thought it might have been that some of the guys were gay.
Jackie: Yeah. They said it was a big twist and I thought, "Well, that would be a huge twist."
TVGO: But you looked so shocked when it was revealed to you.
Jackie: I couldn't believe that that really was it. I had thought of a bunch of different things; that was just one of them.
TVGO: At that point, did the experience stop being about finding a soul mate and become more about winning money?
Jackie: Money wasn't even an issue — that was just an added bonus. I go into all my relationships as friendships; to me that's what makes a relationship. In the three-and-a-half weeks that I was out there, I developed some serious friendships and I was hoping something might spring out of that.
TVGO: Did you ever contemplate quitting?
Jackie: No, I'm not a quitter. When I sign up for something I go for it all the way. But we all had an hour after finding out the twist to decide whether or not we wanted to stay.
TVGO: Your gaydar was pretty weak in the first episode. Have you always had a handicap in that area?
Jackie: Yes. I'm bad.
TVGO: Have you ever fallen for a gay guy in real life?
Jackie: I have not. I had a really close girlfriend who had that happen to her and we all were shocked, because none of us saw it.
TVGO: Did you develop real feelings for any of the guys on the show?
Jackie: I had feelings for all those guys there. They're all true friends. I had the time of my life with them. As to whether or not I had specific feelings for a certain someone, I'm not going to tell you.
TVGO: Now for the $1 million question: Am I gay or straight?
Jackie: (Laughs) I don't know. I have no idea. I'm so bad at it.
TVGO: You have to give me an answer.
Jackie: Can I ask you some questions?
Jackie: What kind of music do you listen to?
TVGO: Um... I like Maroon 5.
Jackie: Oh my God — I just bought their CD!!
