Life on Mars
10:01 pm/ET ABC If you're looking for a police procedural with a twist, it's hard to beat this new series based on the well-regarded British drama of the same name. Here's the unique premise: Sam Tyler (Jason O'Mara) is a present-day NYPD detective who's hit by a car and knocked unconscious in tonight's series opener. When he wakes up, he's inexplicably in 1973. The great ensemble cast includes Harvey Keitel as Tyler's hard-nosed boss, Michael Imperioli as Det. Ray Carling and Gretchen Mol as policewoman Annie Norris, who's the smartest person in the room but underutilized in the sexist times. — Fred MitchellFor clips of Life on Mars, visit our Online Video Guide.CSI: Crime Scene Investigation9 pm/ET CBS Last season's gut-wrenching finale witnessed Undersheriff McKeen firing two shots into Warrick as he sat in his car. Tonight's gripping and unmissable ninth-season opener picks up seconds after that tragic event, with Grissom, Catherine and Warrick's other colleagues learning about the shooting. Their shock quickly turns to resolve as they steadfastly investigate the crime and discover a stunning secret about Warrick. Joining in the probe is the previously departed Sara (Jorja Fox), who returns to the lab when she hears the devastating news. — Tim HollandFor clips of CSI, visit our Online Video Guide.ER10 pm/ET NBC We know Angela Bassett can play tough, and she's definitely that as Dr. Banfield, County General's new ER chief. It's up to the staff to adjust to the new boss since Banfield isn't going anywhere. This doesn't bode well for the antiestablishment Gates, who struggles tonight to save the life of a terrorist even while putting his life — and the lives of his interns — at risk. Meanwhile, Neela makes a stand of her own as she sets her mind to getting her mentor, Dr. Dubenko, back on the surgery staff. — Rhoda Charles For full episodes of ER, visit our Online Video Guide.Kath & Kim8:30 pm/ET NBC The network's latest comedic import kicks off tonight with Molly Shannon and Selma Blair starring as the titular dysfunctional mother-daughter duo. Kim's marriage is in jeopardy after she realizes her husband of six weeks wants her to "do stuff." But the request isn't as scandalous as it may seem — he'd like her to microwave dinner and care about his day. Nonetheless, Kim decides to divorce him and hides out at her mom's house, putting a severe damper on Kath's blossoming romance with a lovable sandwich-shop owner. — Brie HearnFor clips of Kath & Kim, visit our Online Video Guide.MLB Playoff8pm/ET FOX Manny Ramirez's signature dreadlocks will be making yet another October appearance, as will Joe Torre, but on this diamond there isn't a Red Sox or Yankee player in sight. Ramirez and Torre hooked up at the trade deadline to lead the surprising Dodgers to the National League Championship Series, where they'll face the N.L. East champion Phillies. While American Leaguers couldn't find an answer to Manny's many antics, his National League opponents can't find an answer to his red-hot bat. — Kelly McGettiganFor more baseball, visit our Online Video Guide.
