Can best friends really move on after a guy gets in between them?

When we last saw Hellcats, Marti had broken girl code by sleeping with Savannah's boyfriend, Dan. Why? Turns out Dan and Marti have history.

But is that any excuse? Or is her act unforgiveable? Star Aly Michalka says that somehow her character will redeem herself.

"You're going to see the struggles that she's going through and you're going to actually feel for her," Michalka says. "We're humans, we make mistakes, and she never intended to hurt Savannah."

Ashley Tisdale, who plays the peppy Savannah, says that, "It's going to take a minute for the trust to come back." Only a minute? "Marti understands [Savannah] on a different level," Tisdale explains. Although Savannah was deeply betrayed, she appreciates the steps Marti takes to come clean and apologize.

"She doesn't open herself up to a lot of people," Michalka says. "She doesn't show her cards, so for her to lay them down shows a big effort on Marti's part. Savannah takes that as, 'We can be friends, but we got to work better to communicate and be trustworthy."

As for Dan, getting over him won't be easy, both actresses agree, but it will happen. Savannah will still have feelings for her former first boyfriend, but she'll focus her energies on the Hellcats making it to college cheerleading Nationals. "She puts her team first because her personal life is going crazy," Tisdale says.

Hellcats' Dan stuck between what his destiny could be and where his new journey can take him

Michalka says that for Marti, who was best friends with Dan before they crossed the line, both will need to start dating other people before trying to rekindle their friendship. "It's going to take them having relationships separately," she says. "And having that friendship where they're happy with a lover, but can come back to each other and say, 'I need somebody to make me laugh.' Then they can have that release."

Outside of their boy troubles, Savannah will learn something shocking and surprising about her pregnant sister -- Tisdale calls the big twist "very juicy" — while Marti will run into family drama when she seeks out questions about her father's past. "She knows he died when she was young, but then things don't match up [with what her mother has told her]," Michalka says. "There are chances her dad is alive or maybe that her dad is not the person she thought he was."

Hellcats returns Tuesday at 9/8 on CW.
