Time really was a flat circle for countless True Detective fans on Sunday. An influx of HBO Go users got a spiraling error message and caused the service to crash, preventing an unknown number of fans from seeing the conclusion of one of the most buzzed-about winter shows.
"Due to overwhelmingly popular demand for #TrueDetective, we've been made aware of an issue affecting some users," the service tweeted Sunday at 9:50 p.m. ET. "Please try again soon."
But fans were still having trouble logging in well after the episode ended at 10 p.m. In addition to viewer outrage, the stalled service prompted some hilarious tweets and the hashtag #TrueDefective.
Some speculated that the malfunction was intentional on the part of HBO, in an attempt to discourage HBO Go users from sharing their log-in information with non-subscribers.
