David E. Kelley, the Emmy-winning writer and producer behind TV hits Ally McBeal, The Practice and Boston Legal, has created yet another quirky new legal drama (his specialty!). Harry's Law stars Kathy Bates as a burned-out patent attorney who runs a storefront criminal-defense firm. Kelley briefs us on what we need to know about his latest legal eagle.
Harry was supposed to be a man.
"We didn't find the actor we thought embodied everything Harry should or could be, so we opened the field up to women and, as soon as we did, Kathy's name leaped to the top of the list," he says about casting the Oscar winner. "We feel blessed to have her."
Viewers might not be wild about Harry at first...and that's OK.
"The character doesn't really care to be liked. She doesn't set out to make the world a better place. It just happens to work out that way as she pursues a livelihood."
Harry may be the smartest person in the room, but she can still learn a thing or two.
"She's certainly a brilliant attorney, but she's not emotionally the smartest because she has never been one to care about people or relationships. Now, at 60, she'll learn to."
Harry's Law premieres Monday at 10/9c on NBC.
