Sorry, Happy Endings Fans - Here's the Sad Truth Behind That Countdown Clock

Happy Endings fans didn't get a happy ending after all.

After weeks of speculation about a tweet from the Happy Endings writing team of a countdown clock that expired on April 1, it turns out the post was nothing more than an extended April Fool's joke.

Fall TV Scorecard: What's renewed? What's canceled?

The URL teased in the original post, dated February 6, read: "It's almost a new day," and linked to a countdown clock set to expire on April 1, leading some fans to believe that new Happy Endings content was being produced.

Sadly, nothing is currently in the works - but creator David Caspe tells Entertainment Weeklythat the countdown clock (which he wasn't aware of prior to its posting) made him start thinking about a reunion, and he hasn't ruled out the possibility of one in the future.

"It took on a life of its own to the point that actually there was some interest in finding a place to do a few more episodes or an hourlong special," Caspe says. "So then I couldn't comment because I wasn't allowed to say anything yet. But as we hit April 1, nothing has really panned out, and I don't want to keep people hanging on, so I have to say something. Happy Endings remains cancelled for now. Hopefully one day we'll be able to do an hourlong or a couple stand-alone episodes, and I've talked to the cast about even just doing a five-minute cold open. I want to apologize to anyone who is annoyed."

The writing team also apologized for the prank on Wednesday.

Happy...April Fools' Day! Sorry! All for fun. Caspe & Co had nothing to do with it. Thanks for being so hyper-passionate about the show.
