Hairspray Live, NBC's next musical event, will officially premiere on December 7. While it's the peacock network's fourth live musical event, it will be their first to answer Fox's Grease: Live!,which walloped 2015's The Wiz Live in ratings.

To do that they'll be recruiting a familiar face: theater icon Harvey Fierstein, who won a Tony in 2003 for playing Edna Turnblad in the Broadway production and wrote the The Wiz Live! teleplay, will write this one too.

Grease Live's ratings are sure to make Fox hand jive

While no additional cast details have been provided yet, the show also includes songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who co-wrote the music for the Broadway version of the 1968 John Waters classic. The 2007 film version of the musical starred John Travolta and Zac Efron, so it's a sure bet we'll see some heavy star power in NBC's turn.
