Grey's Anatomy: Where Were We and What's Next?

Grey's Anatomy returns Thursday (9/8c, ABC) with a two-hour premiere that picks up just moments after the events of last season's finale, in which a super-storm ravaged the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meredith and Derek will be celebrating the birth of baby Bailey, Callie and Arizona will be struggling with the latter's infidelity, and Cristina and Owen will once again be on the outs. But there's oh so much more that will be happening at the hospital, so you might need a quick refresher on where we left off — and a juicy tease about what comes next in Season 10:

Grey's Anatomy returns Thursday (9/8c, ABC) with a two-hour premiere that picks up just moments after the events of last season's finale, in which a super-storm ravaged the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meredith and Derek will be celebrating the birth of baby Bailey, Callie and Arizona will be struggling with the latter's infidelity, and Cristina and Owen will once again be on the outs. But there's oh so much more that will be happening at the hospital, so you might need a quick refresher on where we left off — and a juicy tease about what comes next in Season 10:

Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Will Webber survive? Can Calzona repair the damage?

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo)
Where Were We? After suffering a fall down the stairs during the super-storm, Meredith gave birth to baby Bailey.
What's Next? Meredith is struggling to find the balance between her professional life and owning the hospital and her personal life with two kids. With Meredith and Derek both taking leave, the duo will go crazy at home. "They're competing with each other at home," Pompeo says. "Then, Mer sneaks and goes and does the surgery. Sneaking around on each other's backs in Grey's is us doing surgeries." Plus: Mer will eventually need to face the loss of her person since Sandra Oh will be exiting the series after Season 10.

Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)
Where Were We? Derek, who has found a potential protégé in Brooks, welcomed baby Bailey in the finale.
What's Next? Next to dealing with at least two tiny humans in his home, Derek may have a new project on the horizon. "What they're doing is basically the brain mapping and that will come out of collaboration with Callie," Dempsey says. Derek and the rest of the board members will also be facing financial issues in the wake of the super-storm, which will lead to some major competition to get funds to keep them afloat.

Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes talks cast exits, Calzona's future and a funny Season 10

Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh)
Where Were We? Seeing that Owen is clearly upset over the idea that they'll never have children together, Cristina decides to break things off for good.
What's Next? "We're going to watch them grapple with what it means to have broken up at the end of the season and what that means for their future," executive producer Shonda Rhimes says. "For both of them, the hard part is that they love each other. They want very, very different things, but they love each other. If only she'd want to have babies, or if only he'd give up wanting kids, they'd be fine." The whole hospital will also eventually have to deal with the impending exit — or death — of Cristina Yang when Oh exits the series.

Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd)
Where Were We? After another heated discussion about the baby topic, Cristina decided she didn't want to get in the way of his happiness and broke up with Owen.
What's Next? Owen will take steps to actually move on from Cristina. "Cristina's being supportive of him meeting someone else," McKidd says. "Will Cristina still feel the same way, even though she's been the one cheerleading and Owen's been the one who's been very reluctant to do that, when she realizes maybe he's taken her advice at last?" Still, Rhimes and McKidd both think Cris and Owen still love each other — and there's a chance that could mean they can't stay away from each other.

Exclusive Grey's Anatomy First Look: How will Grey Sloan Memorial handle the storm?

Alex Karev (Justin Chambers)
Where Were We? Alex threatened Chest Peckwell not to report Jo to the police for beating him senseless. After he assisted parents in the NICU to keep their babies alive during the power outage, Alex admitted to Jo that he loves her.
What's Next? Alex and Jo will be exploring the passion between them in the opening episodes. "It just doesn't quite happen as smoothly as they hope that it would," Camilla Luddington says. Adds Rhimes: "Alex obviously has some residual relationship issues from many of his past relationships. But I also wanted this season to have a lot of fun in it, and I wanted it to be funny. Alex and Jo are really charmingly funny together, so we're having a lot of fun with them as we begin."

Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw)
Where Were We? After carrying on a flirtation with Dr. Boswell (Hilarie Burton), Arizona had a romp in the on-call room with her. But when Callie discovered the truth, Arizona finally screamed at her wife that she doesn't understand what the survivors went through in the plane crash.
What's Next? Arizona will attempt to repair the damage, but, "It's pretty dark," Capshaw says. "Arizona has done something so terrible and so tragically divisive that there's really nothing that she can do besides be penitent and present and say everything she can to try to rectify it." However, there's only so much she can do. "There's the showing up and apologizing and saying how sorry you are, but there's a certain point when, if a person doesn't want to move forward from that, then you have to move forward from that." We may actually see Arizona acting out this season as she deals with her PTSD head-on. "I don't think it's the infidelity that brings her to that sort of reckoning," Capshaw adds, "I think that she's got a bit further to go down the rabbit hole."

Can Grey's Anatomy go on past Season 10?

Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez)
Where Were We? After spending the season trying to help Arizona get back some normalcy after the plane crash, Callie discovered that her wife cheated on her.
What's Next? Arizona's infidelity won't be kept a secret for very long since Callie will publically act out in the opening episodes. "She doesn't trust Arizona so a lot of the behavior is coming from that anger, that rage, sadness and confusion," Ramirez says. Unlike last season, the duo will be unable to live in denial about their issues. "When the trust is broken as much as it is, how do you reengage with your partner? How do you trust them with something as simple as taking care of their child?" Callie will find support from Meredith and Cristina, one of whom will betray her early on.

Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams)
Where Were We? After nearly dying in a bus explosion, April essentially gave Jackson an ultimatum — but hewas still seeing Stephanie!
What's Next? "We pick up in the room with her waiting for a response from him and of course we get interrupted," Drew says. "We don't really know how Jackson feels for a little while." The duo will continue to struggle with their feelings, which will be made more difficult since Matthew will be sticking around for a few episodes — and also that Stephanie still has feelings for Jackson as well. "They're going to still be in the throes of this triangle for a little while."

Sandra Oh to depart Grey's Anatomy after Season 10

April Kepner (Sarah Drew)
Where Were We? Although she was already engaged to Matthew, April had second thoughts when she
realized the depths of her feelings for Jackson, after she thought he had died. She ultimately faced the object of her true affections and told him to give her a reason not to marry Matthew.
What's Next?
In addition to dealing with her love life, we'll also see April finally take her medical boards again. "She's really going to come into her own as a total kick a-- trauma attending," Drew says. "We're going to see her interact more with the interns, and she'll have much more of a teacher role."

Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.)
Where Were We? After helping Cristina through a surgery in the dark, Richard went to check on the generator and ended up getting electrocuted. His seemingly lifeless body is the last image of Season 9.
What's Next? It's the big question of the premiere: Will Webber survive his electrocution? We have to stay mum.

25 Grey's Anatomy episodes you must watch before Season 10

Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)
Where Were We? After struggling with her confidence after killing three patients, Bailey finally got back in the OR in order to save Meredith's life.
What's Next? Bailey is back! "We watched Bailey get pulled out of where she was when she had to operate on Meredith, which was a really big moment in terms of having a cathartic change on her, which was great," Rhimes says. However, "She's got other challenges this season that we will see."

The Interns: Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), Gaius Charles (Shane Ross), Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer), Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) and Heather Brooks (Tina Majorino)
Where Were We? Jo beat her ex up before helping keep the tiny humans alive and having Alex profess his love for her. Shane continued to be shot down by Derek, who had seen the potential in Brooks to be his new protégé. Stephanie was still seeing Jackson, and Leah had yet to land a meaty story line.
What's Next? We'll see the interns figuring out what departments they want to work for. But could Heather's fate be hanging in the balance after we saw her get electrocuted in the search for Webber? Majorino is starring on a TNT drama next year, so that could mean she won't be sticking around. Meanwhile, Jo will be exploring her new relationship with Alex, and Stephanie and Jackson will hit a rough patch since April professed her love for him in the finale.
