April did, in fact, get married in the Grey's Anatomymidseason premiere. But the groom was the toss-up.

After running away from her wedding to Matthew (Justin Bruening) with Jackson (Jesse Williams), April (Sarah Drew) freaked out when the realization hit that she had just crushed someone's dreams all so she could ... date her ex-boyfriend? So, Jackson and April made it official after a road trip to Reno, though they've kept it secret from their co-workers for the last three weeks. But will the new rule being instituted that says superiors cannot date their subordinates unless they were already married, it won't be long before the news gets out. How will the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial, particularly Jackson's ex-girlfriend Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton), react? TVGuide.com sat down with Drew on the set of Grey's to get the scoop.

Grey's Anatomy: What's in store for the docs of Grey Sloan Memorial?

April chose Jackson! How is she feeling about that decision?
Sarah Drew:
Like most decisions that April makes, she is full of confusion and lots of emotion. No matter what decision she was going to make, she was going to hurt somebody. There was no way to avoid that. Dealing with the wreckage of the heart that she just demolished in front of all of his friends and family is going to take a toll on her emotionally. But she knows that this is the right decision because she knows that Jackson is the person for her. It's bittersweet. They're so happy and so in love and grateful to have not made a mistake, but, at the same time, they've left a ton of wreckage in their wake and there are consequences to that.

Has it been hard for them to secretly date in the hospital?
Drew:
They love it. Keeping it a secret is the thing that enables them to insulate themselves and not to deal with the wreckage. They just desperately want to have honeymoon time; a moment that they can enjoy the fact that they actually realized they wanted to be together and they acted on it. There's a bit of denial of the pain that they left by keeping it secret and they want to hold onto that.

How will the new rule affect them in particular?
Drew:
It's going to be hard, but in some ways, it's going to be a huge relief to them. It's hard to keep it a secret and sneak around. It's sexy also, so there's mixed feelings about finally telling people what's going on, but they have to. There's no way to get around it. If they get caught, they could get in trouble.

What's that working relationship with Stephanie?
Drew:
It's all really awful and we'll see a lot of that play out with Stephanie's interactions with her friends and with Jackson. The momentary interactions Stephanie has with April, you'll see a lot of that pain right in front of April's face. They have to deal with it, but it's hard because you want to just celebrate the fact that you've found the person you want to spend your life with, but in April and Jackson's case, they can't just celebrate because they've hurt a lot of people.

Grey's Anatomy Scoop: Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey sign two-year deals

How will the hospital react when they learn the truth?
Drew:
Everybody is shocked. It's not something that they expected from April, for sure, or from Jackson. April and Jackson never even dated. They had a sexual relationship for a period of time, but they've mostly been best friends, so everyone is completely flabbergasted and shocked by it. This is a much deeper wound for Stephanie to find out that not only did Jackson leave her at the wedding — also, he was her ride, so there's that — but he went and married somebody else on the same day. That's a pretty awful scenario for Stephanie.

How will Jackson and April deal with now being in a relationship?
Drew:
They're coming to terms with the fact that they have some very different sets of values and that is going to create tension in their marriage. Some of these things they just really haven't thought about because it happened so quickly. They're living together and thinking about the potential of kids eventually. How are they going to raise their kids? April's belief system is different than Jackson's belief system. How do you navigate that? We'll see a lot of that tension and drama build over the next several episodes.

Were you surprised April and Jackson got married?
