With Sandra Oh leaving Grey's Anatomy, the new vacancy at Grey Sloan could be quickly filled by Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone).

Exclusive: Private Practice's Caterina Scorsone returning to Grey's Anatomy

Derek's lil sis returned last week to test out what family life is like now that James (Matt Long) has proposed to her. Unfortunately, Amelia's babysitting experiment ended with disastrous results, as she realized that being a stay-at-home mom isn't nearly as easy as it appears, and she decides to stay in Seattle for the foreseeable future. "She's going to be hanging out in Seattle at least until the end of the season and grappling with questions both personal and professional," Scorsone tells TVGuide.com.

Naturally, James will be pretty miffed about his new fiancée running away, especially when she starts to see Seattle as a permanent solution. "We see that James is not happy with the fact that Amelia has abandoned ship a little bit and hitched over to Seattle to freak out," Scorsone says, also (unfortunately) revealing that Long will not pop up. "There's a lot of discussion and Amelia is talking to James very actively, but we don't actually see Matt's lovely face."

Grey's Anatomy Exclusive First Look: Grey Sloan inundated after possible terrorist attack

After years apart from her brother, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Amelia will be especially enticed by the possibility of forging a bond with him. "He seems to have eased up on her a little in terms of her status as the black sheep of the family," she says. "He's forgiven her for some of her past behavior as he's seen her mature and deal with her own tragedies and come through them with grace. She's back in the hospital in the next episode and they're working on this very complicated neurology case involving conjoined twins that he has actually asked her to participate on because he needs another skilled neurosurgeon because they're dealing with two brains. He's reluctantly pretty impressed with her as a surgeon."

Staying at the Dream House will also provide Amelia the opportunity to connect with her sister-in-law Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). "Amelia was very close to Addison on Private Practice, but because Derek was in Seattle, she never really got a chance to know Meredith very well," Scorsone says. "Meredith is leaning on her for a little bit of help with the childcare now that Derek is shuttling back and forth to Washington. Amelia starts to lean on Meredith a little as she's struggling with her questions on engagement, marriage, children and her career."

As for those left behind in Los Angeles, don't expect to learn too much about what's been going on with the gang at Seaside Wellness, though there will be a few hints. "She definitely talks about the dynamic of Seaside Wellness versus the dynamic at Grey Sloan Memorial," Scorsone says. "You get a sense of the different tones of the hospital and the practice, but also of the two shows."

So, will Scorsone be sticking around full time next season? "There's always a chance," she says. "I leave my fate in Shonda [Rhimes]' capable hands. I know the writers are going to be getting together with Shonda at the helm to figure out what the story is going to be next year pretty soon, so hopefully Amelia will get to stick around and play. Both Shonda and I talked about, when Private Practice ended, that Amelia's story wasn't done yet. I'm happy to be back for at least a few episodes to explore where Amelia ends up after going through all the wonderful and terrible things that she went through a couple years ago."
