Super 8 earned $21.3 million in its second week to take the No. 2 spot.
The week's other new release, Mr. Popper's Penguins, debuted third with $18.2 million.
X-Men: First Class ranked fourth ($11.5 million), followed by The Hangover Part II at No. 5 ($9.6 million). In its fourth week, The Hangover Part II is now the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, topping its predecessor. Its take so far: $232.7 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (No. 8, $6.2 million, and $220.3 million after five weekends), Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris (No. 9, $5.2 million) and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (No. 10, $2.2 million).
